'Our sites will proactively look for opportunities to implement sustainable practices for the management of waste, including recycling, re-using and repurposing waste. Where this is not possible, we will manage the disposal of waste in the most appropriate manner, giving full consideration to the environment and to all locally available options for waste management.'

Paper-Free Lab Submissions at Afrivet Lab Services
In 2025, the team at Afrivet Lab Services in Hilton introduced a fillable PDF lab submission form, making the entire submission process paper-free. Previously, each submission relied on printed forms, generating unnecessary paper waste at every stage of the workflow.

By transitioning to a fully digital format, the team eliminated physical documentation from the process entirely, reducing paper consumption while also improving the accuracy and speed of data capture.

Sustainable Ice Sourcing at Bimeda South Africa
In 2025, the team switched to ice cubes produced using water from sustainably managed sources and packaged in recyclable plastic.

At Bimeda South Africa, shredded waste paper generated on site is now collected and repurposed as protective filling material inside transit cartons. This initiative eliminates the need to purchase additional packaging materials while simultaneously diverting shredded paper from general waste streams.

In mid-2025, Line 3 tanks at the Non-Sterile Liquids Plant in Le Sueur were upgraded to use a heated water bath system for cleaning operations. Previously, the process consumed significant energy for heating and resulted in higher volumes of water being used and wasted per cycle.
The new system optimises each cleaning cycle, reducing both energy and water consumption while maintaining the high standards required for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Following a review of their Amazon product bundle configurations, the team at Bimeda Anglesey successfully redesigned the packaging to remove unnecessary shrink wrap and plastic waste. The updated bundles protect products during transit without any single-use plastic layer.

The team at Bimeda Brazil implemented a series of environmental initiatives in 2025: dry storage for filters eliminated alcohol solution storage; label reduction in warehouse operations cut material consumption; motion sensors for lighting reduced electricity use in production airlocks; and freight optimisation consolidated smaller shipments, lowering carbon emissions and costs.

New Visual Scale Reduces Errors and Waste at Bimeda Le Sueur
The procurement of a new Visual Scale at Bimeda Le Sueur in 2025 brought immediate improvements in quality and waste reduction. The scale features a flashing colour indicator that alerts operators in real time when a pouch weight falls outside acceptable limits, and includes a printer for individual result records.
By catching deviations immediately, the scale reduces rework, documentation errors, and quality events, translating directly into less material waste and more efficient use of energy across the production process.

In 2025, a coordinated project transferred quality control laboratory services from Ireland to Bimeda Anglesey in the UK. Previously, QC samples from the UK site were regularly transported to Ireland for analysis, generating unnecessary transport miles and associated emissions.
